Agent-net open-sourced Webagent, an Apache 2.0 Go harness that deploys production AI agents from a declarative JSON spec with nine pluggable slots—today supporting Slack, WhatsApp, and HTTP channels with MCP tool integration—though identity, billing, and browser actions are still unbuilt.

Details

Webagent is a Go framework for standing up public-facing business AI agents. The core abstraction is a JSON spec with nine pluggable slots: Brain (LLM + instructions), Retrieval, Memory, Guardrail, Channel, Secrets, Presenter, Model, and Action. Each slot has built-in providers and a default; businesses swap providers without touching the core. The repo ships under Apache 2.0 and builds green with live Slack, WhatsApp, and HTTP channels backed by MCP tools today. The most architecturally significant decision is the action.Guard layer: every tool the agent holds—whether from the action provider or injected by the host—is wrapped so the chosen guardrail runs before execution. The model cannot bypass it. This code-enforced safety, rather than prompt-enforced safety, addresses a well-known weakness in current agent frameworks cited by the project's own DESIGN.md with reference to arXiv 2511.19477. The project is explicitly labeled v0, and several pieces are missing: browser actions, OAuth-gated MCP, OTel export, and the AgentNet identity and billing layer for agent-to-agent payments. The echo Brain works without credentials for local validation, while OpenRouter and a gateway provider offer real model access. A business with an existing MCP server becomes an acting agent with one spec block.
