Apple's iOS 27 introduces Siri AI — a fully rebuilt assistant with on-device personal context indexing, screen awareness, and native text generation that drops the ChatGPT integration dependency. Available only on iPhone 15 Pro or newer, it marks Apple's most direct push yet against dedicated AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Apple is launching Siri AI alongside iOS 27, a substantial overhaul of an assistant that debuted in 2011 but fell well behind ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and other modern AI tools. The rebrand and feature set represent Apple's clearest attempt yet to reclaim ground on its own platform rather than delegating to third-party AI providers. The new Siri AI delivers four core upgrades: deep personal context indexing of texts, emails, and calendars so users can ask natural-language questions about their own data; real-time screen awareness so Siri understands whatever is currently displayed without requiring a screenshot; native text generation and editing without routing requests through ChatGPT; and camera integration for visual queries — reading menus, identifying landmarks, or inspecting on-screen content in any app. Apple is emphasizing on-device processing for all personal data indexing — nothing is sent to Apple's servers. However, the full feature set requires iPhone 15 Pro or newer, which excludes a substantial portion of the active iPhone base from the most capable features. The competitive stakes are meaningful: Apple controls access to hundreds of millions of premium smartphone users. A capable native AI assistant reduces the incentive to switch to standalone ChatGPT or Gemini apps and deepens ecosystem lock-in. Whether Siri AI's real-world capabilities hold up against dedicated AI apps in daily use is untested as of launch.
