Microsoft’s Clippy-like Mico character is no longer the face of Copilot

Microsoft is removing Mico, its emotive animated avatar introduced in Copilot's voice mode last October, after less than 12 months in production. The character — a yellow blob with facial expressions that reacted in real-time during voice conversations — was created as part of Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman's vision to give Copilot a distinct identity. It will move to Microsoft's Learn Live educational platform, where the company says it will have more to react to. The retirement is part of a broader Copilot consolidation effort: Microsoft is merging its standalone Copilot app with Microsoft 365 Copilot, and a recent leadership reshuffle placed Jacob Andreou in charge of Copilot while Suleyman pivoted to developing new AI models. Mico joins Clippy, Cortana, and Rover on Microsoft's long list of retired virtual assistants. The episode illustrates a broader pattern in consumer AI: emotional avatars and personality-driven interfaces are difficult to sustain when enterprise consolidation becomes the priority. Microsoft said Mico provided learnings about warmth and expressiveness that are shaping Copilot going forward — standard framing for a product discontinuation. The change is rolling out in waves.
