OpenAI CEO Sam Altman labeled neocloud AI infrastructure expansion "unsustainable silliness," warning that providers are announcing massive GPU capacity without matching customer demand — and that OpenAI's own efficiency gains could make today's expensive buildouts financially ruinous.

In a podcast interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman turned notably bearish on the broader AI compute buildout, criticizing what he describes as reckless capacity expansion by neocloud providers. He called it "unsustainable silliness," pointing to a wave of providers announcing massive GPU clusters while lacking the revenue or customers to justify the spending — a pattern he sees as financially dangerous. Altman drew a deliberate distinction between OpenAI's own infrastructure expansion — which he said is profitable and backed by real customer demand — and competitors operating with a "cost is no object" mindset. His target appears to be the neocloud providers that raised capital on AI infrastructure speculation without building matching enterprise demand. The CEO also flagged a self-defeating dynamic: if OpenAI cuts inference costs and improves efficiency faster than expected, it could devalue the very infrastructure buildouts underway today — including some capacity commitments OpenAI itself has made. He said the risk is manageable for OpenAI but implied it could be fatal for smaller, less diversified players. On selling spare compute to third parties, Altman declined to commit but did not rule it out. The statement is a notable tone shift: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously accused Altman of "YOLO"-ing money into compute. Now Altman is the one warning of excess — though his self-interest in talking down neocloud competition is worth noting.
