Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter — an AI model gateway serving 8 million users with access to 400+ models — for more than $7 billion, marking one of the largest AI infrastructure acquisitions on record.

Details

OpenRouter built its reputation as a neutral aggregator of AI model APIs, letting developers route requests across providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) based on cost and capability — earning CEO Alex Atallah's comparison to 'Stripe for AI.' The startup raised a $113 million Series B in May 2026 at a $1.3 billion valuation, backed by Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG.\n\nBloomberg confirmed the deal price exceeds $7 billion — a roughly 5.4x premium on OpenRouter's last private valuation. For Stripe, the acquisition would dramatically expand its footprint into AI infrastructure, enabling bundling of payment processing with AI model orchestration and billing — a natural adjacency for enterprise customers building AI-powered products.\n\nThe deal consolidates a critical piece of the AI stack. OpenRouter's vendor-neutral positioning may shift under Stripe's ownership, and developers who rely on it for multi-provider model access face questions about pricing, lock-in risk, and whether Stripe will maintain model neutrality long-term. A Stripe spokesperson declined to comment.
