XPENG has separated its physical AI and robotics business into a distinct entity and closed a $900M+ funding round, valuing the unit at $6.3 billion. IDG Capital and Gaorong Ventures led the round; Tencent and Alibaba joined as strategic investors. XPENG retains controlling ownership and will keep the unit consolidated into group financials. The capital is earmarked for full-stack physical AI R&D — covering software, hardware, and model training — plus high-quality data generation and the build-out of end-to-end mass production facilities. Some funds will support commercial expansion outside China, signaling ambitions beyond the domestic market. At the center of the strategy is IRON, a humanoid robot with 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand. XPENG built the fully-enclosed flexible lattice structure in-house, balancing appearance with safety. The company frames IRON as a product moving from development toward commercial deployment at scale. The funding contrast with XPENG's core vehicle business is stark: shares are down 7.22% on the day and 51.24% over the past 12 months as the EV unit faces mounting competition from domestic manufacturers and Tesla. Investors appear willing to bet on robotics even as they sour on the car business.
